How Sabrina the Two-Fingered Sloth Fell (Literally) Into Our Hearts
Every month, The Sloth Institute introduces you to one sloth in our care who’s stolen our hearts. This August, that title goes to a baby sloth with main character energy: Sabrina Carpenter.
A Fall, a Beach Party, and a Rescue
Sabrina’s story starts on the sand at Playa Matapalo in the South Pacific of Costa Rica. Late one night, in the middle of a beach party, she fell from her mother and was found by partygoers who scooped her up and brought her into their home to keep her safe.
Our team headed out to attempt a reunion, but the odds were stacked against us. Sabrina’s mother was high in a tree, and between the loud music, the bonfire, and the crowd of people and kids nearby, she was far too frightened to come down. We tried again early the next morning when things had quieted down, but she had already moved on. With no safe way to reunite mother and baby, Sabrina came into our care.
This rescue happened on April 15th, the same day as one of our own team members’ birthdays, which makes sense considering that this sloth has quickly become her favorite (even though really, they are all equally loved).
Sabrina cried a lot in her first days in our care, which is heartbreaking but completely normal for a baby processing the separation from their mother at that age. What made the difference was that she drank milk well from the very beginning, a strong early sign for any orphaned baby.
Not long after arriving, she paired up with another young rescue, Hannah Montana (and former Sloth-of-the-Month), and the two have been inseparable ever since. Hannah is the smaller of the two but makes up for it in boldness, climbing all over Sabrina without a hint of hesitation. Sabrina, true to her role as the elder sister, takes it all in stride. She’s endlessly patient, letting Hannah clamber over her like a jungle gym while staying completely unbothered.
Together they’ve earned a nickname around here: the angel babies. Two pop girlies, best of both sloth worlds, living their best lives growing big and strong in The Sloth Institute nursery.
Sabrina does have one very specific standard: her milk has to be the perfect temperature. Not too hot, not too cold. A true Goldilocks in sloth form.
