Teaching Future Sloth Conservationists

Education & Training

Educating the next generation is the key to a better world. But educating the current generation is also essential. Our educational programs aim to educate all ages and nationalities. People all over the world have the potential to affect sloths in the wild.

Through classes and presentations, we have worked with students in Costa Rica and internationally in the US and the UK to educate them about sloth biology and ways they can help keep sloths wild. In addition, we give educational “Sloth Walks” to guests staying at Tulemar in Manuel Antonio. These walks take guests around the forested property of Tulemar gardens, finding wild sloths and teaching them about our work to rescue and research sloths and keep them wild.

We provide education and training for our first responders by working closely with public servants in Costa Rica like the Fire Fighters and Electrical company employees. We train them about basic sloth biology and how to properly handle and restrain sloths during rescue operations, especially from electric wires.

In places like the US, Fire Fighters are known for getting cats out of trees when they’ve climbed too high. Here in Costa Rica, Fire Fighters often have to save sloths from electric wires to prevent injury or remove them from houses or yards when they’ve strayed too far from the forest. We work closely with fire departments along the pacific coast of Costa Rica to complete a special TSI sloth rescue training program. This program includes in-person training as well as access to our educational guide created specifically for FireFighters and ICE workers.
