Here at The Sloth Institute, we believe there’s no better ambassador for Mother’s Day than a resilient sloth mom.
Meet Tilly
One outstanding sloth is Tilly. Tilly was rescued from the illegal photo trade in 2018 after being found in a garage being used as a photo prop for tourists. Her captors had painted her nails, kept her in unsafe conditions, and were exploiting her for money, causing her to be extremely malnourished and weak. By the time authorities had rescued her, we feared the worst.

Thankfully, Tilly was a fighter, and with our support and the help of compassionate partners, she began to regain her strength. After recovering through our rehabilitation program, she learned to survive on her own and was released into the wild, where she belongs, with a tracking collar to ensure her safety.
Despite her difficult past, Tilly is thriving in the canopy and has become one of the most successful sloth mothers we have yet to track – currently raising her fifth baby, and expecting another! We can’t wait to continue watching her thrive as a mother in the wild.
This Mother’s Day, you can symbolically adopt Tilly and receive a limited-edition Mother’s Day adoption certificate to honor your special mom or a mother figure in your life. Whether you’re gifting it, or keeping it for yourself, your adoption directly supports our mission to enhance and expand the welfare and conservation of sloths.
Meet More Rainforest Moms
Tilly isn’t the only incredible sloth mom we’ve encountered! You can also learn about Harriet, another resilient mother who recently gave birth to a healthy rainbow baby after making her way through our Sloth School System.
One sloth mom that you may not know yet is Baby Momma. Currently expecting, Baby Momma is a victim of electrocution who has only been with us for a few weeks. Unfortunately, powerline electrocutions are far too common in Costa Rica, with many victims not surviving. Luckily, Baby Momma’s burns were not too severe, however, we quickly found that she was pregnant, making her rehabilitation far more delicate.

After evaluation, she was treated with fluids, antibiotics that were safe for both her and the baby, pain medications, and had her burn wounds cared for with cleaning and burn cream. Now, she’s doing much better and will soon be ready to make her way back to her rainforest home!
How to Support
This Mother’s Day, let’s celebrate all of the resilient mothers and mother figures – whether human or sloth! With every adoption, you are helping us build a better future for sloths and the rainforest they call home.
When you adopt a sloth mom this May, you’ll not only receive a special limited-edition Mother’s Day certificate, but you’ll also:
- Help provide food, medicine, and care for sloths in rehabilitation
