Wild Neighbors Collaboration
Protecting wildlife, preserving nature, and fostering community stewardship in Escaleras, Costa Rica
About Costa Verde Estates
Nestled in the South Pacific region of Costa Rica, Costa Verde Estates spans 1,250 acres, blending pristine forest with sustainable living.
- 400 acres dedicated to reforestation and conservation
- 70 acres of communal space
- 98 private estates connected by 11 km of eco-friendly roads
Focused on Protecting Rainforest
Founded by Terry Penland and Dan Aalfs, Costa Verde was envisioned as a sanctuary for people and wildlife alike. From the early 2000s, CVE transitioned from cattle pasture to rewilded rainforest, planting thousands of native trees, protecting wildlife from hunting, and adopting community guidelines that prioritize harmony with nature.
Today, Costa Verde is managed by its Property Owners Association (POA), preserving its legacy of conservation and ensuring the land remains a refuge for both residents and wildlife.
About the Sloth Institute
The Sloth Institute Costa Rica (TSI) is a U.S. nonprofit and Costa Rican foundation dedicated to:
- Rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured or orphaned sloths
- Conducting cutting-edge research on sloth behavior and ecology
- Conservation initiatives that protect wild habitats and prevent wildlife-human conflict
Through community partnerships, TSI creates long-term impact for sloths and countless other species that share their forests.

The Wild Neighbors Program: A Community Collaboration
Costa Verde Estates is teaming up with The Sloth Institute to launch the Wild Neighbors Program: an initiative designed to enhance local wildlife welfare, strengthen ecosystems, and connect residents with the biodiversity in their own backyard.
Key Projects:
- Reforestation Support: Reforesting strategic lots and corridors within CVE to help wildlife move safely across the community.
- Sloth Speedways: Installing more wildlife canopy bridges that allow sloths, monkeys, and other arboreal species to travel overhead, avoiding roads and powerlines.
- Wildlife Census: Documenting the animals who call CVE home, creating a record to better protect them, and help residents understand their living neighbors.
- Future Research Opportunities: Depending on community interest, CVE could host a satellite research station, expanding sloth conservation science in the South Pacific.
By backing this collaboration, CVE residents will:
- Protect the wildlife in their backyards
- Strengthen property value through sustainable stewardship
- Gain access to TSI-led research and conservation expertise
- Leave a lasting legacy of conservation for future generations
