Meet Taylor, our Sloth of the Month for December – a tiny two-fingered sloth with a big personality and an even bigger future ahead of her!
Taylor’s story began on November 18th in Manuel Antonio, when hotel staff made an unusual discovery: a baby two-fingered sloth clinging to a three-fingered sloth. This little one had no mother and was far too young to survive on her own.
That’s when Taylor (affectionately named after Taylor Swift by our team) arrived at The Sloth Institute to begin her rehabilitation journey.

At just weeks old, Taylor faced the challenges many orphaned sloths encounter. Without her mother’s constant warmth, protection, and guidance, she needed round-the-clock care to survive. But from day one, Taylor showed us she was a fighter.
She took to the bottle with enthusiasm, and when it came time to introduce solid foods, Taylor dove right in, munching on fresh leaves with an appetite that signals she’s ready to grow strong.
Even better? She’s gaining weight beautifully! Every gram matters when you’re a baby sloth, and Taylor is hitting all the right milestones.

Within a couple of weeks of her arrival, two other juvenile sloths came into our care: Travis (yes, we went there) and Opi, short for Opalite. The three of them form our newest cohort of Sloth School students, a program designed to teach young, orphaned sloths everything they need to know to thrive in the wild.
In Sloth School, Taylor will learn essential survival skills such as how to find the right leaves to eat, how to navigate the forest canopy, how to recognize predators, and how to be… well, a sloth! Our team provides the structure and safety, but ultimately, it’s up to Taylor and her classmates to develop the instincts that will carry them through life in the rainforest.

Taylor’s prognosis is excellent. She’s healthy, thriving, and showing all the behaviors we want to see in a young sloth preparing for life in the wild. Over the next few months, we’ll watch her grow stronger, more independent, and more confident in her climbing abilities.
When the time comes, we’ll release Taylor back into the wild where she belongs. That’s the goal for every sloth who comes through our doors – to return to the wild.
