Meet Carl the Three-Fingered Sloth
Every month, we spotlight one of the incredible sloths in our care, and for September, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Carl, a baby three-fingered sloth with a big heart and an even bigger comeback story.
Carl’s Rescue Story
In early August, Carl was found on the ground in Manuel Antonio, weak and struggling to survive. When he arrived at our clinic, our veterinary team discovered he was battling:
An infected tick bite
A heavy infestation of mites
A general infection that left him exhausted and frail
Carl was immediately treated with antibiotics, parasite care, and plenty of hydration. Slowly but surely, he started to regain his strength, and today, he’s already showing signs of recovery.
Why Carl Needed Help
Carl is still far too small to be on his own. In the wild, baby sloths depend on their mothers for many months. Sadly, Carl was likely weaned too early because of a fragmented habitat and a lack of food resources for his mother.
Without intervention, he would not have survived on his own. But with your help, Carl has a chance to grow strong, learn essential sloth skills, and one day return to the rainforest where he belongs.
What is Carl’s Future
Carl’s prognosis is excellent! He’s gaining weight, getting stronger every day, and soon will be introduced to other juvenile sloths at our facility. These social connections are vital for young sloths learning how to thrive in the wild.
